What Important Documents to Keep and How Long

Its well past spring cleaning season, but that doesnt mean the stack of papers of things to go through and file has gotten any smaller.  Many people are not quite sure what important papers they should keep, what they should shred, and how long they should hang on to them.  A few suggestions:

• Deposit, ATM receipts- Save until the transactions appear on your bank statement and you verify it is accurate.
• Past tax returns – 7 years past the year you file 
• Real estate property deeds/title paper work Duration of ownership plus up to 6 years after a change of ownership
• Passports – Most recent, until replaced
• Medical records – Permanently
• Employment Records – Permanently

City of Allen Water Restrictions

The City of Allen has implemented water conservation stages. Part of this includes irrigation between 10am and 6pm is prohibited from April 1-October 31.  There are no set days of the week to water your yard, but the city recommends limiting to 2 days per week.  It is also prohibited to irrigated your yard during any form of precipitation.

The City of Allen offers several rebates and incentives to residents that help conserve water. There are several options:

Summer Maintenance on Your Home

Temperatures are up and BBQs are running. Now is a great time to make sure that your house is prepared to endure the Texas Summer heat!  A few tips for you: 

• Check all recreational equipment and review outdoor safety tips
• Check your wood deck or concrete patio for possible deterioration
• Make sure there are working nightlights at the top and bottom of all stairs
 
• Check exterior siding
• Check all window and door locks for proper operation
• Have your roof inspected for potential leaks once every few years
• Inspect and clean dust from the covers of your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
 
• Check the water hoses on the clothes washer, refrigerator icemaker and dishwasher for cracks and bubbles
• Check your water heater for rust or leaks
• Clean the clothes dryer exhaust duct, damper and space under the dryer
• Socialize your dog to help reduce potential dog bites
